Tony Bavota
Emergency Management Consultant
Tony has 32 years of emergency services experience. He progressed through the ranks from probationary firefighter to Chief Officer and has held leadership positions for the City of Toronto and the City of Burlington.
At Toronto Fire Services, Tony guided the staff teams responsible for the department becoming accredited by the Commission of Fire Accreditation International. This resulted in Toronto becoming the largest accredited fire service in North America. While holding the organizational performance portfolio for Toronto Fire, Tony introduced Results Based Accountability as a performance management framework that has become ubiquitous in the department’s culture. Tony has also trained as a Peer Assessor and has participated as a member on review teams for Carmel Indiana and the District of North Vancouver Fire Departments.
Tony’s research on succession management practices in Ontario fire departments has come to life in the creation of competency frameworks that are used by municipalities for recruitment, leadership development, employee assessment and promotion. This work has allowed him to champion the on-going professional development of others to achieve their career goals.
His community involvement has included supporting the literacy program at the Children’s Breakfast Clubs and serving as the honorary co-chair of the Gift-of-Giving Back food drive.
